Becoming a living monument
Relic is an immersive installation by Polish artist Karolina Halatek. Through light, mist and architecture, the work transforms the visitor into an integral part of the sculpture.
Concept
Balancing monumental sculpture and contemplative experience, Relic explores the relationship between the individual, space and perception.
A pyramid of light rises within the landscape. Visible from afar, its vertical beam acts as a signal, drawing visitors towards its centre. The work only fully comes to life through their presence: each person is invited to enter the structure, pass through the light and, for a brief moment, become a living monument.
Through this simple gesture, Karolina Halatek questions the place of the individual within the collective and gives tangible form to an experience of presence.
Installation
The installation is composed of circular white metal steps crossed by a vertical beam of light extending into the sky. Artificial mist reveals the density of the light, transforming space into a physical material.
As visitors reach the summit, they enter an environment where their silhouettes appear, disappear and continuously recompose themselves. Somewhere between architecture, sculpture and luminous landscape, Relic creates a contemplative space that invites visitors to slow down, observe and fully inhabit the present moment.
